The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary
Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

My Review
I had to read this book for class, and it is one of few that I have enjoyed! I had to read 76 pages of it each week for four weeks, and 1 month is a super long time to drag out a 302 page book, so that might be one reason for the 3 star rating, and not as detailed review.

I liked the authors style, especially the description and her use of similes and metaphors. The time span was done well, and nothing felt rushed. The pace kind of lulled the reader and I was just waiting for something bad to happen quite often. I thougt that the description of 1964 south fit right in with history.

Lily was a very courageous character when it came to putting up with her cruel father T. Ray, breaking Rosaleen out of jail, and running away. She was a very intriguing character, obsessed with what happened to her mother, missing her, and wanting to learn everything about her, but too afraid to ask the people who would know. So when Lily and Rosaleen need somewhere to go, they head to a place where Lily knew her mother had been. Who and what they discover once there is quite interesting and I enjoyed unravelling the mysteries of her mother and the people around her, from the sisters, to Lily herself.

One of my favorite parts about this book was the watching Lily's character growth, faith growth, and the little life lessons that were distributed throughout the book.

My Review
4.5 Stars
Like Enchanted and Hero, stepping into Dearest was like stepping into a realm of magic with characters who have a fate and destiny all their own!

Displaying Miracles Inside.jpgI love them all, but Dearest just might be my favorite book of this series. Dearest was full of so many delightful, unique characters that come to life as soon as they were introduced. From the sisters and characters met in the previous books to new friends, Alethea Kontis develops them with exceptional skill!

Friday was such a relateable character. Almost too kind to be real, but realistic all the same. She had such an abounding kindness, grace, and personality that characters and readers alike just can't help but like her. With a heart of pure gold, Friday took care of "an army of children," staying in the kindgdom of Arriland, taken over by her sister, Saturday's, ocean. She is determined to find the silver linings, be a shining light, and help all she can. Even when she is led to the seven cursed brothers, swan by day men by knight, and mute sister in the tower of Princess Sunday's castle, she is not to be defeated no matter what may arise.

Each of the seven brothers had a distinct personality, and I really enjoyed getting to know them. From Tristan and Friday's bond, to Francoise's love of books, to Sebastians swan Odette, Phillipe's brooding, and the twins, they all stood out in their own way. Elise, the sister forced into silence was an interesting character, and one that was also inspiring to watch. She was so full of life, yet she was unable to communicate with the ones she loved. The children and citizens of Arilland also work their way into the hearts of the reader in a way that only children can! I work with children a lot, and I must say that Friday's patience and pure, constant kindness would come in very handy around them!
Displaying Destiny.jpg

One of the things I love most about this series, and this book is the sense of destiny and fate that Alethea Kontis always seems to weave into her stories so seamlessly. Though her characters might not always be keen on accepting their fate, or know how to fulfill their destiny, it always presents itself with intrigue and an entertaining adventure to go along with it! Destiny must be embraced, and fate isn't up to you!

The journey that Dearest takes readers on is more than I can put into words without spoiling at least one discovery. I will say that this book is perfect for those that enjoy a story that will inspire and enchant! There is beautiful love, heart pounding action, fantasy and flying, magic and sorcery, destiny and fate, kindness and curses, and a little something for everyone!

I recieved a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. This in no way affected my opinions, and all thoughts and opinions are solely my own.

Hero vs. Heroine vs. Sidekick

This is what I categorize my wandering whims under! My mind may be wanting to write about life, blogging, music, movies, or anything under the sun, and if it doesn't fit into one of my other features then, well, here it will goes!
~ ~ ~ ~
Heros vs. Heroines vs. Sidekicks
Whether an epic story, a myth, a fantasy novel, or a contemporary novel, each story has something in common. A hero and a heroine! This hero or heroine may or may not save the world, they might not even seem like the hero or heroine that everyone dreams about and aspires to be. They may seem pretty normal. They may seem just like you. And you know what? That’s because they are! They make mistakes yet they don’t let that stop them from doing what is right! That is what makes a true heroic person.

Heros vs. Heroines vs. Sidekicks?
The main difference between the first two is pretty obvious. A hero is a male and a heroine is a female. A sidekick can obviously be either. But, when you get down to it, which is better and which do we prefer to see most in books?

My answer is All of the above!

I like both hero’s and heroine’s, and find they are both necessary in a book. Of course some books only have one and that's okay, but most have both and often many, and that is what I’m focusing on today.

When done right, a hero and heroine make each other stronger. The male does not overbear the female and take all the glory, he realizes that females can defend themselves sometimes and they don’t need him to do every little thing for them. Females can brush their own hair, thank you! (flips hair and tosses head with some sass)

While a female heroine can do most things and is equal to men she needs to realize that no one is perfect and some situations may call for a little help. If said help comes from a male specimen that doesn’t make the female species any weaker. "I might need you, but no more than you need me!" And vise versa!
A sidekick is like a best friend. Fiercely loyal to the end, and willing to do everything in their power to help. They are just as important as the hero and heroine!
A hero, a heroine, and a sidekick are equal. They can hold their own in banter filled conversations calling for a wit that only they can match. They make each other stronger. They help each other, and when you get down to it they aspire to do what they think is best.
What are you're thoughts on heros, heroines, and sidekicks?

Top Ten Favorite Heroines From Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we pick the top ten things for the topic of the week.  I really enjoy writing these posts, because I love lists, and this is a great way to look back at books I've read and toward the books I want to read!
Topic: Top Ten Favorite Heroines From Books

I love heroines in books who show us what we can be while showing those guys how awesome we are! We are your equal - you will realize it now!

These heroines are awesome, and because their so awesome, I think I'll tell you why too...so

Waterfall (River of Time, #1) Cascade (River of Time, #2)
Gabriella and Lia are totally awesome sword wielding feisty heroines of 14th century Italy. They battle enemy knights alongside their guys, evade capture, and really show the 14th century what girls are made of! They aren't as fragile as they seem, though they tried to use that perception to their advantage!

Heart Song (Heart Song Tril... Shifter's Heart (Heart Song Trilogy, #2)
Alanna and Laelynn are totally fantastic and inspiring heroines! They have incredible power that they use for the good of their country and those they love! Trust me, these are two heroines you don't want to mess with, but totally want to meet and have on your side!

The Ryn (Eyes of E'veria, #1)
Rynnaia is a heroine with a new-found prophesy giving her purpose, a new-found faith to give her strength and guidance, new-found friends to help her along the way, new-found family to get to know, and of course a new-found guy to lean if she would ever need it! This girl is an inspiring heroine for sure!

Star of Deliverance
Emi is a heroine that isn't afraid to risk it all for the ones she loves, ready and willing to do whatever she can to help save her country.

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3)
Of course the team of the Lunar Chronicles is full of some great kickin it heroines too! All ready to save their planet from the evil Queen Levana!

Season of Wonder (The Remnants, #1)
Andriana and her other female Ailith are trained and willing to shield the world from the evil Sons of Sheol. Trust me, they're awesome!

 The Strength of Ballerinas
Kendra is a ballerina full of strength and determination, persevering to do whatever it takes to dance through her illness.

Conception (Future Savior, #1)
The Future Savior series is full of kicking, swinging, and sword wielding heroines with some special gifts to help them along the way!

The Merchant's Daughter The Healer's Apprentice The Fairest BeautyThe Captive Maiden  The Princess Spy
Speaking of awesome heroines, I can't forget about all of the fantastic ones from all of Melanie Dickerson's fairy-tale retellings! They are definitely more capable than the originals!

I know I cheated, but there are still so many more heroines who are so awesome! This is just half of the top layer of my favorites!

The Seahorse Legacy by Serena Chase

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary

A Pirate, bound by a centuries-old oath -- a Knight, determined to prove her calling -- a Legacy, demanding surrender

As Keeper of the Seahorse Legacy, Cazien de Pollis is a King among pirates, divinely appointed to dispense justice on the seas. Bound by the sacred oath of a long-dead ancestor, he must fulfill a contract to wed the green-eyed Oracle’s Daughter named therein—or risk losing everything he and his people hold dear. But at nineteen, with the identity of his betrothed only recently revealed, Cazien resents the contract—and the urgency within him to see it satisfied.

Erielle de Gladiel returned from the quest for the Remedy, changed. Not only are her formerly-blue eyes now a brilliant shade of green, but she must don gloves to hide inky evidence that her prophetically-bestowed title, the Oracle’s Daughter, demands more from her than the task already completed. Erielle’s dearest-held dream is realized when she is knighted by her King, but unbeknownst to her, that very honor jeopardizes the prophesied purpose to which she and Cazien have been called.

Just as Cazien summons the courage to collect his bride, dark rumors and darker deeds crawl up the coasts, calling its guardians, the Seahorse Pirates, into action—and Cazien away from Erielle. But even though the Oracle’s Daughter knows nothing of the contract to which she has been consigned, Cazien’s enemies have somehow learned of his interest in Erielle. And if they reach her before his ancestor’s weighty oath is executed, the Seahorse Legacy will be forfeited . . . and darkness will be given reign.

The third book in this series-within-a series, The Seahorse Legacy begins an epic re-imagining of the classic Grimm fairy tale, The Twelve Dancing Princesses which will conclude in Eyes of E’veria, Book 4: The Sunken Realm , coming in 2015.

Want to dive deeper into the world of E'veria? Look for the first two-book set in the Eyes of E'veria series by Serena Chase! The Ryn (book 1) and The Remedy (book 2) retell the classic Grimm fairy tale Snow White & Rose Red on an inspirational and epic scale.

My Review
(Fair warning this is going to be a long review)

I completely fell in love with the first two books in the Eyes of E’veria series, The Ryn and The Remedy, so I was really excited to return to E’veria! I was also very curious to see what Serena Chase would do from the perspectives of Cazien and Erielle, and let me tell you, I was far from disappointed! Surprised? yes! Shocked? Yes! Thrilled? Pretty much! Disappointed? Definite no way!
It was very intriguing to get in the heads of Captain Cryptic, better known as Cazien de Pollis reigning heir of the Seahorse Pirates, and the Lady Knight, or Erielle de Gladiel Regeant of Mynisbyr’s daughter. We met them in the first two books, but now they are the main characters, and it was quite a big difference from Julien and Rynnaia, whom I was glad to revisit;)

This time we get to know the insider info from Cazien instead of his oh so cryptic answers, how interesting it was! A second prophesy, a betrothal contract, and the mystery of missing boys? And the fantastical fantasy world that we get to revisit? Yes, we need all the info we can get! And if you want more you’ll have to read the book! I enjoyed the sailing setting and Seahorse Pirates very much!

Erielle, on the other hand, is struggling with her Knightly duties and responsibilities. Though being a Knight was what she had dreamed of her entire life, it’s not quite everything she thought it would be. The code of conduct and chivalry of her fellow (literally fellow) Knights makes Knighthood very hard because of their inability to treat her as an equal.

Erielle and Cazien both had a lot of character growth to make and problems to overcome. I enjoyed their journey’s, both faith and moral wise. I think that Erielle had the toughest time, and it was really hard to watch her go through all the things she had to go through. I was cringing and may have lost a few tears at the treatment she received during the (especially) the last half of the book. It was so sad, and I felt so bad for her. This novel definitely took learning a lesson the hard way to the extreme, but I understand that life isn’t always as clean cut as we would like it to be. While it may not always look like it, The First always has a plan, even when we can’t see it, and He is always there for us. We need to follow the plan that The First has laid out for us, even when we don’t understand or want to. I really enjoyed the way that was expressed so well and purely through even the dire circumstances that the characters saw. It was really emotional and very beautifully written. Well done Ms. Chase!

Erielle and Cazien both have an inner strength that is inspiring and delightful. It was evident through watching them overcome the obstacles, and circumstances placed in their way.

I really, really enjoyed the fantastic banter between Cazien and Erielle, and I can see that even if they don’t completely know it yet, they are perfect for each other. I laughed out loud, and quite a few times I might add. They can both stand on their own! I can’t wait to see what Ms. Chase has in store for them in The Sunken Realm.

This third book is a lot heavier and more gritty than the first two. Though I normally don’t do gritty, Ms. Chase does a fantastic job balancing the dire occurrences with light, witty banter, and beautifully entwined spiritual elements, and moral strength making the book overall very enjoyable. Though some of the events in this book were hard to read, it was well done, and flowed into the pure beauty and magic that Serena Chase is so wonderful at putting in books. I recommend this book to those fifteen and up.

My only disappointment was that it ended, and I have to wait so long for The Sunken Realm. I can’t wait! I need book four!

So, please read books 1 and 2 first, because they are phenomenal and all time favorites of mine, and I’m sure you will enjoy them too! Trust me, you want the full experience! Even if you don’t normally like fantasy or fairy tale retellings (and who doesn’t like those?), read these anyway because this series is the best created fantasy ever!

And now I stop before I spoil something!

I can't wait to read yours!

Displaying BANNER - 2015 LOVEATHON.png
So excited to be participating in the 2015 Book Blogger Love-A-Thon hosted by Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books. Even though I'm super late, I know this will be fun!

1. What's You're Name?
Hi, my name is Lakin (lake - in, I thought give a break down because it's been pronounced so many ways including Larkin, Lankin, Lackin, and Lurkin among others!)

2. Where in the world are you blogging from?
I am blogging from somewhere in the green hills (that are white and cold at the moment) of the United States of America!

3. How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I got interested in Goodreads and somewhere along the way of reading reviews on there I discovered book blogs. I started following a bunch of them, and in January of  2014 I decided that I wanted to start my own. So here I am!

4. How did you come up with your blog name?
Well, books often fill readers with wonder, so I decided on Wonderous Reviews!

5. What genre do you read and review the most on your blog?
I read and review quite a variety of fairy tale retellings, fantasy, and Christian fiction, along with a little contemporary YA to top it all off!

6. What other types of posts do you do on you blog, apart from reviews?
I really enjoy writing discussion posts! Until this year, I was afraid to write them, but I got over it and now I love them. I also love memes and my features because they are so fun to write and they bring about such wonderful interaction!

7. Best blogging experience so far?
Interacting with so many amazing authors and readers!

8. Favorite thing about the blogging community?
Definitely all of the support and book love that seems to be so abundant around here.

9. Name the 5 books you're the most excited for this 2015!
Remnants Season of Fire by Lisa T. Bergren
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson
The Sunken Realm by Serena Chase
The Captive Imposter by Dawn Crandall
An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund
Wild Hearts by Jessica Burkhart
After A Fashion by Jen Turano
(Oh, I'm sorry if that's more than 5, I never claimed to be a math genius)

10. What's an underrated book or series that you think everyone should read?
I'm not sure that they are underrated, but everyone should definitely read The Eyes of E'veria series by Serena Chase, and the River of Time series by Lisa T. Bergren!

11. Which book boy or girl would be your BFF?
My favorite characters from any of my favorite books! (It's so hard to decide)

12. Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?
I enjoy spending time with my family, going on mission trips (I've only been on one - to Romania an it was such an amazing experience), traveling, being outside, walking my black lab Princess, baking, gardening, and ice skating. Oh, and blogging!

13. Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for?
Clothes of course! And shoes, but especially dresses!

14. Pick out either a book you want turned into a film/TV show, or a film/TV show you want turned into a book.
Hmmm. I have mixed feelings about book to movie adaptations. Sometimes they work, but most of the time it just isn't the same. If everything was exactly like the book, then it would be really awesome to see The Eyes of E'veria series by Serena Chase made into a TV show (a movie wouldn't be long enough)!

I can't wait to read everyone else's posts!

Hero by Alethea Kontis

Hero (Woodcutter Sisters #2)Hero by Alethea Kontis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary
Rough and tumble Saturday Woodcutter thinks she's the only one of her sisters without any magic—until the day she accidentally conjures an ocean in the backyard. With her sword in tow, Saturday sets sail on a pirate ship, only to find herself kidnapped and whisked off to the top of the world. Is Saturday powerful enough to kill the mountain witch who holds her captive and save the world from sure destruction? And, as she wonders grumpily, "Did romance have to be part of the adventure?" As in Enchanted, readers will revel in the fragments of fairy tales that embellish this action-packed story of adventure and, yes, romance.

My Review
Hero was just as good as Enchanted! I'm always up for a good fairytale retelling, and I love the mixture and spins that are found in Alethea Kontis's books.

The Woodcutter sisters all have unique gifts, and Saturday felt like she had been left out of the special category. She has her sword, but without it what is special about her? She doesn't have to wait long, for she suddenly conjures an ocean... on accident. This, of course, sets forth an adventure worth a strong Woodcutter sister!

As Saturday sets sail on her ocean, gets kidnapped by a witch set on opening a door into the devil realm, Saturday meets Peregrine, the man cursed to play the blind witches daughter, and Betwixt the everchanging chimura. These three turn out to be a team to be reckoned with, because together they seem pretty unstoppable. With each one's knowledge and skill can they best the witch?

I loved the setting, the magic, the family dynamics, and the determination and loyalty to family and friends. Saturday, so used to being a protector and independent had to lean on Peregrine and Betwixt at times, and they in turn had to trust her.

I enjoyed the banter and sparks that flew between the characters. I also really appreciated the fact the Peregrine wasn't afraid to admit that he was in love with Saturday. Most of the time characters try to hide their feeling, so it was really nice to see them be so honest with each other, yet it wasn't exactly insta love which made it even better.

If you like fantasy and fairy tales, this is one book that you won't want to miss!
