My Review
I had to read this book for class, and it is one of few that I have enjoyed! I had to read 76 pages of it each week for four weeks, and 1 month is a super long time to drag out a 302 page book, so that might be one reason for the 3 star rating, and not as detailed review.
I liked the authors style, especially the description and her use of similes and metaphors. The time span was done well, and nothing felt rushed. The pace kind of lulled the reader and I was just waiting for something bad to happen quite often. I thougt that the description of 1964 south fit right in with history.
Lily was a very courageous character when it came to putting up with her cruel father T. Ray, breaking Rosaleen out of jail, and running away. She was a very intriguing character, obsessed with what happened to her mother, missing her, and wanting to learn everything about her, but too afraid to ask the people who would know. So when Lily and Rosaleen need somewhere to go, they head to a place where Lily knew her mother had been. Who and what they discover once there is quite interesting and I enjoyed unravelling the mysteries of her mother and the people around her, from the sisters, to Lily herself.
One of my favorite parts about this book was the watching Lily's character growth, faith growth, and the little life lessons that were distributed throughout the book.
