An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary
Due to her parents' promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, a month before her birthday, a friend of her father's enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents' will left a second choice. If Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.

Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the competition for her heart seemingly results in a knight playing foul, she begins to wonder if the cloister is the best place after all. If only one of the knights the one who appears the most guilty had not already captured her heart.

My Review
The Vow (the prequel to An Uncertain Choice) and An Uncertain Choice were my first Jody Hedlund experiences. I had heard so many great things about Jody Hedlund and her writing, and after experiencing it for myself I can certainly see why and am more than willing to read many more of her books! Her writing has a beautiful flow and descriptiveness. And the characters and plot? Well, they most definitely did not disappoint either!

First of all, I’m a huge fan of historical fiction, and Medieval times are always pretty fun and super interesting to read about. I really enjoyed the history and culture that were interwoven into the everyday lives and customs of the characters in this story.

After meeting Lady Rosemarie at age fourteen in The Vow, I appreciated her kind nature, compassion and strength, her realistic reactions, and relatable feelings. In An Uncertain Choice, as I witnessed her character growth, I came to respect those same qualities in her, as well as her faith, will to do everything she could to bestow kindness on her people, her grace, and growing leadership and confidence, and her aversion to torture. Although she had fears, and who doesn’t? she refused to allow the fear to take over.

I found the alternative to the vow and becoming a Nun, very interesting - marry before midnight of her eighteenth birthday. The option led to some very entertaining moments, and of course some very noble and attractive Knights! Each Knight had unique qualities, character traits, and interests, yet they all have their noble character, bravery, loyalty, and friendship in common. It must have been fun for Rosemarie to have three such Knights vying for her attention, but I can’t say that I wished to be in her position! There was one Knight in particular that I fell in love with, right along with Rosemarie. I loved how the author could make things such as the Knight’s voice so swoon worthy! They were a perfect couple!

Then there was the mystery and action! The mystery was intriguing and, though I had an idea of who and what, it was fun to watch the characters figure it out! I love reading about the balls, jousts, and other medieval customs! There was such a perfect balance between light hearted banter and courting, and serious issues.

The whole novel was delightful! There was plenty of great characters, witty banter, swoon worthy Knights (one especially so!), clean romance, action, and so much more! The beautiful writing style drew me in immediately, and I couldn’t break its hold until I was completely finished. I got lost in the world of An Uncertain Choice, and it should be a very certain choice that compels you to pick up this book immediately!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion, and all thoughts and opinions are solely my own.
